Breaking Down Employment Barriers for Minority Ethnic Women

Through our Minority Ethnic (ME) Women’s Project, we work with women looking to return to work,
commensurate with their qualifications and experience, after a period out of the workplace. These women are mainly graduates and postgraduates but the project is open to all women returners.

Many have fallen into poverty despite their qualifications and many have slipped through the various Government subsidy nets, despite having the right to work. The project has been developed following our experience and learning gained from delivering resilience programmes for minority ethnic people. It also builds on our successful delivery of Women Returners and
Workplace Equality Programmes over the last five years.

Through these, we have supported 410 ME women to increase their confidence and improve their employability skills, introducing them to employers to support their networking and supporting many into paid placements and work.

One such programme of 50 ME women, saw 21 going into meaningful employment within four months of completing the programme. We are therefore estimating that around 50% of the women completing the ME Women’s Project will be in meaningful employment within 4 months of completion.

Outcomes and Impact

The outcomes of the project will be increased confidence, self-esteem, employability and qualifications for the women, leading to increased economic mobility and reduced poverty and improved employment practices of those employers taking part.

Our methods influence the social mobility of the participants because they lead to increased motivation, higher achievements, further education, increased skills and training, and a variety of networking opportunities.
